Digital Storytelling
Storytelling is the organization of specific details, either real or imagined, in a way that represents a cause-and-effect relationship. A well-developed story will provide a reader with context and relevance, facilitating the making of meaning and improving memory. Storytelling is a powerful way of communicating ideas, highlighting experiences, and helping us to make sense of what we know. Humans learn by both experiencing and telling stories. We forget facts in isolation, so stories situate ideas within a broader context, providing greater understanding and creating a durable memory. For Digital Narrative and Cognition, I authored a personalized story using a rubric I created for this course. This experience helped me develop skills for applying instructional design principles in a creative and innovative way, in a digital learning environment. This story shares with “readers” about the development of Scratch, a free tool that can be used by young people to create using technology, and Scratch Foundation, the nonprofit organization that supports it.
